Let Us Tell You Our Story

The idea of the Igbo Women’s Association was conceived at the ‘ngbaru’ or bereavement observance of Mrs. Anne Uzoaba’s mother in the summer of 2008. Women were so moved by the display of sisterly support and warmth reminiscence of what we have back home in Nigeria. There was a unanimous agreement to preserve (togetherness, socialization and support for one another) and continue the gains of meeting in this way. Shortly after, our first meeting was held at Mrs. Nelly Mgbemena’s in Pembroke, and our association was formed. Members agreed that the objective of the association would be – to provide a forum for discussion of issues pertaining to the enhancement of the group. An ad hoc executive was also set up. They included Bernadette Nwaiwu – President, Nneka Ejiofor –Secretary and Kelechi Akwiwu - Email and Communication. What we do

Our Engagement Is Mainstay For Us

We foster a sense of pride in our Igbo heritage and culture by creating a supportive and collaborative community of Igbo Women in the National Capital Region (Ottawa and Gatineau) in which we promote and share our culture with one another, our children, family and community at large. We also support and empower Igbo women to reach their full potential through capacity building.

We host a variety of charitable events throughout the year, including visit to different motherless childrens homes. We visited Mother of Divine Grace Orphanage Asaba, Okwelle Motherless babies home Owerri amonsgt others. We also showcase our traditional dances, music, and attire.
